Neither Katherine nor Meg will talk about what happened at Snape. Do you agree with Dot’s decision to keep Meg’s secret? Why does Dot finally tell Katherine the truth about what Meg endured at Snape?

I do not agree with Dot to keep Meg's secret from Katherine. It was a terrible thing that happened, and since I believe that Katherine truly loved Meg like a daughter, she should know the truth. Dot finally tells Katherine the truth because Meg was continuing to deteriorate health-wise.

Dot felt bound to keep Meg's secret and didn't feel right divulging it until Meg was close to death. Katherine might have been able to help Meg over the years if she had known the truth. They had both endured the same terrible actions at Snape.

Meg trusted Dot and if Dot had revealed Meg's secret sooner it may have harmed Meg even more. Though Katherine may have been able to help Meg, Meg may not have been strong enough to know that someone else was aware of what happened to her. By the time that Dot told Katherine they both knew that Meg was dying.

Dot was Meg's servant and as such her loyalty was to Meg. To have told Katherine would've been a betrayal to Meg. Meg wanted to spare Katherine from the knowledge of her rape and under those circumstances Dot had to honor her mistress's decision.

I agree with irisf - keeping the secret demonstrated Dot's loyalty to Meg. Loyalty was everything. When she finally told Katherine, she wasn't betraying Meg. The secret did demonstrate to Katherine the absolute nature of Dot's loyalty.

Even in the case of rape a woman was blamed and shunned when she was no longer a virgin. She had less value on the marriage mart. She would have been deeply ashamed. Dot knew but was asked not to reveal this to anyone. She was a good and loyal friend but to have told would have risked ruining Meg's reputation and I think that was an important reason for Dot remaining silent. When it was apparent Meg was dying it was no longer important.

I agree with Dot's decision to keep Meg's secret because that was during Meg's life, only Meg's painful secret to share. Dot told Katherine to help ease some of Katherine's pain at why her Meg had struggled for so long in this life when Katherine believed that she alone bore the horrible shame of the events of Snape. That way Katherine finally let go of some of the why and could see Meg was finally at peace.
